Hello beauties <3. Let me introduce myself! I'm Jess. So many people ask the question, who are you? Who is Jess? After much thought this is what I came up with!
I am a daughter, sister, a wife, and a mommy (to a pup named Rodger, no human babies for us yet 😉). I live for adventure and exploring new things, places, and ideas. I grew up in the Bay Area and moved to the Sacramento area in Jr high school. My husband and I got married on October 11th, 2011 in California. We have lived all over the U.S, traveling with our 4 legged big baby. Recently we landed here in Davis and Woodland and we can't be anymore in love with beautiful Northern California. I am a photographer who is in love with maternity, birth, and newborn photography. I am a postpartum doula. I am a baby and kid lover, I was a nanny for 15 years and fell in love with each and every one of the babies I got to watch grow. Some of them have graduated high school and are soon going to start a family of their own, but we will skip to the next question so I stop showing my age...
Why Birth Photography?
Because why not? No for real, on a serious note, why wouldn't I want to be involved in watching life happen right before my eyes?! A pregnant woman, in labor, is such a beautiful thing. Being able to photograph the process a woman's body goes through during labor and birth is amazing to watch. What happens often during labor and birth is that families don't remember much because they are so focused on getting baby out and keeping mom, baby and dad calm and safe. Having a photographer at your birth can help freeze those unmissable, unrepeatable, beautiful, loving moments in time. My clients have told me in the past, that having a birth photographer at their birth has helped them remember such a sweet time in their life.
I honestly didn't even know birth photography was a thing! I launched my photography business in June 2016 and I knew I wanted to do something out of the ordinary. In a short time, I have done every type of 'normal' photoshoot you can think of. I'm so extremely grateful I was able to do that because I was able to really decide what I wanted to focus on. After shooting my first birth, that's when I knew.. hell yes, this is what I want to do, birth photography is why I am here. It's my new passion, my new love, my new obsession!
Just a fun quick little story <3. I booked my first birth in the middle of July (mamas due date was end of July). She lives in Vacaville California, which is super close to Davis and Woodland. It was the perfect situation for me because they really wanted a photographer at their birth, and I was referred to them by a dear doula friend. I was told her first birth went super quick, so I was prepared to leave asap once I got the phone call from her family. We did a last minute "rainbow baby" shoot. Let me tell you it really was last minute. Mama went into labor a few short hours after that photography mini session, just about right after I got back into Davis. I drove back to Vacaville for the beginning of the labor and baby was born 4 hours after! Super quick beautiful home birth. It's honestly was the perfect first one, I was prepared, it was quick (not like a 36 hour labor, I'm sure I'll experience at some point in my birth photography career, which is totally fine by the way 😉). Having this birth as my first experience even seeing a birth was my "I want to do this full time." I'm am so extremely excited to be on this birth journey ❤.
